Music for Contemplation is very excited to announce JUST RHODES: a program of newly commissioned works for a restored 1975 Rhodes electric piano in a just tuning system, performed by keyboardist Andrea Lodge. The program will include works by composers Elizabeth Adams, Gelsey Bell, Christina Campanella, Jack Callahan, James Ilgenfritz, Dan Joseph, Erin Rogers and David Watson.

At its core a research project, JUST RHODES challenges composers to work with harmony and melody in a new way. Most music is written in equal temperament, where the distance between notes is the same. Conventions and assumption have crystalized around this tuning. By using a new tuning, composers confront their assumptions, opening the door to new way of thinking
.
Beginning in January of 2025, the instrument went to the first commissioned composer, who completed a new piece by the end of the month. From there, it went to a new composer each month, resulting in the first round of new works heard here tonight

About the artist:

Andrea Lodge is a specialist in contemporary music, dedicated to introducing audiences to fresh and adventurous sounds. She has performed as soloist at events such as the International Sound Symposium, the International Computer Music Conference, Princeton Sound Kitchen and the New Found Music Festival. She has commissioned and premiered new works by current voices in contemporary music, including Phong Tran, Yaz Lancaster, Christopher Adler and Brian Simalchik.  Much of Andrea’s work is collaborative; she is a founding member of the new music quartet, Hypercube, which has been active since 2014. Her performance activities extend to engagements with the nief-norf collective, the Atlantic String Quartet, and a variety of vocalists specializing in operatic and musical-theater repertoire. Her growing discography highlights her commitment to new music, including Hypercube’s acclaimed albums Brain on Fire and The Force for Good; the evocative Dew Drops On a Lotus Leaf which showcases Marga Richter’s vocal works; Elliot Cole’s Night Flower; and Flames Will Grow, with saxophonist Allison Adams.

As an educator, Andrea teaches at Adelphi University and CUNY York College. She is the Organist and Choir Director at Zion Episcopal Church in Douglaston, Queens. Andrea holds a DMA in Piano Performance from Stony Brook University. When she’s not playing contemporary music, Andrea plays Newfoundland and Irish folk music with her husband, Jay Sorce. They are currently training their 2 year-old son Charlie to be part of the band.2

Music for Contemplation, Inc. (“MufoCo”) invites listeners to light concentration by presenting concerts, organizing workshops and retreats, and commissioning and developing new music. MufoCo welcomes a broad interpretation of “contemplation,” including classical, jazz, free improvisation, and experimental music styles. Past programs have included thick, dense dissonant drones, whispy half-heard sounds of the slight brush of a bow on a string, and interlocking Renaissance melodies.

Sincerely, Dan 🎶
